ASCENSION ISLAND

Ascension Island is situated at 7 deg 56'South and 14 deg 25'West in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, 1100 km Northwest of St. Helena, rather exactly on half distance between Brasil and Congo. Approximately 1000 locals are living on an area of 88 sqkm. The temperature is kept all over the year at an average of 25 degree centigrade.

Ascension Island is of volcanic origin. Besides of rabbits and partridges there are also wild donkeys living there! Ascension is also famous for the turtles coming here to bury their eggs from January to May.

The island was discovered on Ascension Day 1501 and thus it was called Ascension Island. Today it is administrated by Great Britain.

Very early this island became a relay station for the sea cables from and to Portugal, South Africa and South America. The NASA is running an observation ward, the English and American army have military bases on the island. During the Falkland Islands war Ascension was the most important base. Today there are regular flights to Great Britain and to the Falklands. Ferries to St. Helena and South Africa are leaving the port in Georgetown.
