VK0 (Heard) There are good news from the VK0 Heard Island DXpedition scheduled for early 1997. VK2TQM and JH4RHF were added to the international list of operators so that there are now 20 team members. Plans are that the group shall arrive on Reunion Island on January 3, 1997 and that their operation will last from January 12-28. They will return to Reunion Island on February 5. HB9AHL and ON6TT met with representatives of the French government and acquired the vessel "Marion Dufresne" which was especially built to operate in the area of Kerguelen, Crozet and Amsterdam Island. The vessel has an overall length of 120.5 meters, a crew of 25, can transport up to 110 passengers and is equipped with everything needed to land on those islands (reaching from a helicopter to several dinghies). After the failure with the Australian ship owner they do not want to risk anything. Unfortunately the charter costs of this vessel added up to 200.000 US-$...
DXCC The ARRL Board of Directors decided at their meeting in Savannah that the ARRL president Rod Stafford, KB6ZV, shall form a new committee. The purpose of the new committee (unofficially called "Committee DXCC 2000") is to think about changes of the actual DXCC program which come into effect by the year 2000. The DXCC criterias will be more easier and the process to delete or add a new country shall be improved. It is not planned to re-start the whole DXCC program and despite of the changes all DXCC credits will be kept. The ARRL president appointed John, N4MM, to be the director of this new committee. Other members are W4RA, K5UR, W6CF, W0CP, N7NG, VE3HO, W5KNE, K5FUV and K8CH.
