1997 PACIFIC NORTHWEST DX CONVENTION. The PNW DX Convention moves yearly between, Washington, Oregon & British Columbia. This year it will be held at Richmond, B.C. on July 25, 26 and 27th. 5Z, KENYA. The "DX News Sheet" reports Christine, a YL operator, is curently active from Kiambu as 5Z4LL and is often found around 1500z on 18145 kHz. QSL to Box 14425, Nairobi, Kenya.

9H, MALTA. The 10th DXpedition to Malta organized by the V.R.Z.A. (Dutch Society of AmateurRadio) will take place from Saturday, 21st June up to Saturday, 5th July. There will be fourteen hams in Sliema, QTH-locator JM75FV, using their own 9H3-callsign. They will activate IOTA EU-023 on the HF-bands, 80-10 meters as well as 6 meters, CW and SSB. There will be four complete stations available. (Last minute update received before going to print: "To commemorate this 10th VRZA DXpedtion to Malta a special clubstation callsign is been issued: 9H0VRZ.") 9M8, EAST MALAYSIA. Arie, PA3FWG, will be active during the month of July for about a month as 9M8ZZ. His activity will include RTTY. No other details were given.

CY9, ST. PAUL ISLAND (Just an early reminder!). Mike, VE9AA, wants OPDX to remind its readers that CY9AA will be active June 26-July 3rd. Operations will be on 160-2 meters with one station on 6 meters FULL TIME on 50.101MHz. CY9AA operators will be: VE1PZ/Doug, K7BV/Dennis and VE9AA/Mike. Also, check out the Web site "http://www.uksmg.org/cy9.htm" to read all about their upcoming trip to St. Paul Island. The LATEST UPDATE, dated June 10th, will be sent to all OPDX InterNet Subscribers as an additional bulletin.

FK, NEW CALEDONIA. FK8HC, although weak, has been heard during East Coast mornings (around 1000z) on 3799 kHz. Also, VKs and Zls stations were on awaiting the VK0 group in Maquirie Island to come on the air at about 1200z.

IOTA NEWS......

• Mauro, I1JQJ, states YB5NOF/8 told him that Bynny, YC8YZ, will be portable from Obi Island (OC-???) until June 19th. Operations are expcted to be on either 7090 or 21260 kHz (he has no other band available). QSL via YC8YZ: P.O. Box 67, Ternate, Halmahera Island 97716, Indonesia.
• Joel, F5IPW, will be active from Oleron Island (EU-032) from June 28th to August 31st and will be especially active for the IOTA contest.
• Alaina, F6BFH, will probably be active as G/F6BFH in July from Isles of Scilly (EU-011).
• Albert, FO5JR, will take his Christmas holidays in French Polynesia and plans to activate Rimatara Island (OC-050). He will take his TS-440 and dipoles with him and will operate CW only on 7010, 10110, 14010, 18110, 21010, 24910 and 28010. More details will be reported later.
• Phil, G3SWH, will be active on CW only as SV8/G3SWH from the Island of Mykonos (EU-067) until June 20th. This will be a holiday operation and activity will be on all bands from 80-10 meters but limited to an hour or so in the mornings, usually between 0600 and 0800z and in the afternoons, usually between 1500 and 1800z. The QSL route is via G3SWH, either direct or via the RSGB Bureau.
• George, SV1QN, will once again be active from Myconos Island (EU-067) as SV1QN/8 during August. Activity will be SSB and CW, but this time he will also work RTTY and SSTV with pictures from the island. His operations will mostly be on 20 meters with some activity on 80, 40, 15, and 10 meters (depending on the propagation). QSL via his CBA or via the SV-bureau.

JW, SVALBARD. Leif, JW2PA, will be active from July 18-26th on all bands from 10 to 80 meters. Activity will be on CW and SSB. QSL to home call LA2PA direct via callbook address or via bureau.

MIDDLE EAST GROUP ACTIVE. Naser/A61AN, and Murtada/9K2MU, are on almost daily on 14240 kHz. Both have S9+ signals into the East Coast. They have been assisting other Middle East/Arabic stations (TA, SU, 7X, A7.... all heard) in working DX. They come on about 2200z until the band dies or they get too sleepy.

QSL NEWS AND INFO......

• Jean, F6AJA, reports he has received the HP1XBI/1 QSLs from the printer. Gerard, HP1XBI, was active from Contadora Island (NA-072) at the end of March. All direct cards will be answered by mail as soon as possible.
• Scott, N1SP, reports the W1 QSL Bureau has been receiving cards for JY6ZZ. This is not correct. Please QSL JY6ZZ direct only!!
• The QSL route for the following stations is via KP4AM (1997 Callbook or earlier): KP4AM/D (Desecheo Is. 1979), KV4IM, VP2VDK, VP2V/KP4AM, NP4P and ZF2DN.
• Tony, WA4JQS/VP8BZL, Director of Operations - South Sandwich Island Antarctic DXpediton Group (SSIDXG), has advised OPDX that the he has (in hand) the landing permission from the Fish and Wildlife Dept. for Chuck Brady's, N4BQW, Midway and Kure Atoll operations which took place in May of 1997. Tony has faxed the document to the DXCC Desk and also other interested parties. Chuck is a member of the SSIDXG, and his operations are SSIDXG supported. Chuck did not request funding for this operation because he did not know if the WX would allow him to land at the time. His out of pocket expense are $6000 (USD), and any help that you can include with your QSL cards to offset this cost would be greatly appreciated. Chuck is also currently active with other SSIDXG operations in the works..
• Lee, KH6BZF, advises OPDX that he is the QSL Manager for Dave, T9/WA5IKQ, and would like to clean up any and all requests for BOSNIA QSLs that might be wandering around. SPECIAL EVENTS.....

• The Rochester, New York DX Association (RDXA) will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this month. The club will operate with its club callsign with the addition of a /50 for the event; W2RDX/50. Look for them to be on the air operating CW, SSB and RTTY. Operations will be in various parts of the band (Time will be spent in the DX, General and Novice portions of the bands). Look for them to be on the air from June 21st at 0000z until July 6th at 2359z. A special QSL card will be available. Stateside and Canada QSL to: AF2K, Irv Goodman, 515 Drumm Rd., Webster, NY 14580. A regular size envelope will do. DX stations may QSL via the bureau. Look for W2RDX during Field Day too!
• Cedric, HB9HFN, reports the section of Fribourg of the Swiss Ham-Radio Association (USKA) is celebrating its 60th anniversary and will use the callsign HB6FG until the end of 1997. QSL via bureau or direct via HB9FG.
• Lithuanian station LY97XA will be active from July 10-20th, to help celebrate the 300th anniversary of Vilkaviskis town. There will be an award (Vilkaviskis-300) available after gathering 5 points for contacts on all shortwave bands with the members of the radio club " Varpas". A plaque "Vilkaviskis-300" is given to a radio amateur after gathering the most points. 2 points are given for contacts with LY97XZ, while 1 point is given with contacts for Varpas members. You can repeat the contacts in different bands. All contacts are counted from July 1, 1997, until December 31, 1997. Conditions for SWL are the same. Applications and the payment of 5 USD for the award can be sent until July 31, 1998, to the following address: P.O.Box 7, Vilkaviskis 4270, Lithuania. VK0, MACQUARIE ISLAND. "The DX News Letter" reports Tom, VK0TS, has a sked with Jim, VK9NS, on 14222 kHz each Saturday and Sunday at 0345z.

ZK2, NIUE. Alan, VK4AAR, reports to OPDX that he is the QSL Manager for Paul/ZK2PJ and Janice/ZK2JJ who will be on Niue Island for the next 2 years. Paul is currently preparing his antenna system and will have a Quad antenna up soon. ADDED NOTE: Alan mentions he is also the QSL Manager for YJ8AA and VK8MI (March 1996 operation on Melville Is), but PLEASE NOTE that Paul is good direct ONLY via the 1995, 1996 and 1997 CBA (callbook address) ***ONLY*** Here's the address for those without the right call book: VK4AAR, Alan Roocroft, Post Office, Dalveen QLD 4374, Australia.
