BHUTAN

The Kingdom of Bhutan is situated between China and India at 27 deg 32'North and 89 deg 45' East at the southern foothills of the Himalaya. It is also called the Kingdom on the Roof of the World. The Bhutanese say Druk Yul which means Land of the Thunder Dragon. With its size of 47.000 sqkm it is slightly bigger than The Netherlands but has only 1.7 million inhabitants. The capital Thimphu has only 15.000 citizens. The highest elevation is the Kula Kangri (7554m). In the North the countryside is dominated by the Himalaya while there are semitropical rainforests in the South.

The country is very remote and only in 1962 the first tar road was built from India to Thimphu. Also there is no convenient road to China. Though there is a new airport in Paro today tourism is kept within reasonable limits. There are many cultural monuments worth to be seen but also hikers and climbers will enjoy Bhutan. Rhinos, elephants, tigers and leopards are still living there in free nature.

The oldest buildings were built in the 12th century and are called Dzong. Those Dzongs are easily defensible monasteries and also seats of the local government. The cultural capital is Thimphu with picturesque monasteries and temples. The oldest Dzong is called Simthoka Dzong and was built in 1627. The largest Dzong is more like a palace and is called Tashichhodzong. It is the home of King Jigme Singye Wangchuk.

Amateur radio: prefix A5, own DXCC entity, CQ zone 22, ITU zone 41. Bhutan is on rank 121 on Germany's Most Wanted DXCC List, Time: UTC +5,5h
