3RD ANNUAL RUSSIAN IOTA/DX CONVENTION will be hosted by the Russian Robinson Club in association with Russian Contest Club and Soyuz Radiolyubitelej Rossii (the Union of Radioamateurs of Russia) on August 29 to 31st, 1997, in Voronezh City, just 300 km south-east of Moscow. The announcement of details will be sent to all OPDX InterNet Subscribers as an additional bulletin.

3W, QUAN PHU QUOC ISLAND, (New IOTA - VIETNAM). By the time you read this, Hiroo, JA2EZD, should be active as 3W6ZD or 3W6PQ. Hiroo was to fly to Phu Quoc Island on the afternoon of June 29th with his TS-850S and tri-band yagi. He will operate all bands including the WARC bands. There is only one flight in a week, so Hiroo will stay and operate until 6 July.

5A, LIBYA. The "DX News Sheet" reports Charly, OE3KLU, and others from Icom-Austria Radio Club will be active from August 28th to September 7th, as 5A28. The group has applied for activity on 160-10 meters and also 6 and 2 meters.

FG, GUADELOUPE. Alain, F2HE, will be active as FG/F2HE now until September 25th. He activity will be mostly on CW. He has plans to try to activate some of the neighboring islands.

HF PROPAGATION QUESTIONS. Lee, KH6BZF, propagation guru who writes articles for several DX publications and magazines, informs OPDX that he is willing to receive questions from readers who send their questions to Lee's E-Mail address. He is willing to answer those questions direct or through his publications to inform all readers. Lee states, "If I don't know the answer(s) I will do my best to find out and respond. HL, ANMYU-DO ISLAND (South Korea). Operators HL1TUE, HL1TMU, HL1MKT and one other will activate this Korean Island (IOTA AS-080) as HL0N/3, from July 4-7th. Activity will be on CW/SSB on 40, 20 and 15 meters. QSL via HL1TUE. Via the bureau at: CPO BOX 162, SEOUL KOREA. Or direct to:

IOTA HUNTER'S NEWS........

JX, JAN MAYEN. Begin looking for YL operator Unnui, LA6RHA, to be active from July 25th through August 1st as JX6RHA. She will be using the military amateur radio station. Operations are planned for SSB but with some CW on demand. Keep a close look on 14248 kHz. QSL to her home call.

NEWLY ELECTED OFFICERS. At the San Diego DX Club's June meeting, the membership elected the following slate of officers to serve for the 1997-1998 term: President- Bruce Clark, K6JYO; Vice President - Jim McCook, W6YA; Secretary/Treasurer - Harry A. Hodges, WA6YOO; Directors - Bill Denton, NG6Z, Larry Serra, N6NC, Bob Pace, WB6NBU and Harvey Hiller, KD6QK. The membership also nominated Dick Shanks, W6BZE, founding President of the San Diego DX Club in 1946, to the position of President Emeritus. His election to this position was unanimous.

NP3, PUERTO RICO. Terry, W5XJ, will be active now until July 16 as NP3G. Activity will be mainly on 40 meters CW. Terry has plans to permanently move here by the end of summer. Also, look for Karen, N4YGP, to be active there as NP3F.

OA175, PERU (Special Prefix). Cesar, OA4QV, states he will be signing with the special prefix OA176 in commemoration of 176 years of Peru's independence. Activity will be from July 1-31st, with their Independence day taking place on July 28th. Operations will be on SSB on 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters. QSL INFO AND NEWS.....

RUSSIAN ACTIVITY. The "Polar-97" DXpedition has began. RA1QQ, RW1ZZ, UA1ZIC, UA1ZJW and UA1ZKW have reported that they started their DXpeditions to the islands of Barentsevo Sea. Look for them to be active from the following islands: Kildin Island (EU-82), Bolshoi Olenij Island (EU-61), Lumbovskyi Island (EU-161) and Novaya Zemlya Island (EU-35). They were hoping to receive a special callsign (which did not happen) when they activate Bolshoi Ainov Island (a new IOTA, EU-???). Instead the team will be signing homecall/1 and the team callsigns of UE1QQQ/1 and UE1ZNF/A. This DXpedition is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of renaming North Russian flotilla to Northern Navy (Severnyi Flot). SPECIAL EVENT. Look for VI0ANARE to be active from July 1st to October 31st to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (A.N.A.R.E.). The suggested frequencies are:

SSB - 3620, 7075, 14175 and 21175 kHz
CW - 3532, 7020, 14052 and 21052 kHz
WARC bands by request and all frequencies are "+/-" QRM. QSL direct only to VK4AAR (Alan guarantees a fast reply, but no bureau facilities are available for him). Bureau cards go to VK4ARB.

SPECIAL PREFIXES.....

USI ALERT. Randall, KD8JN, will activate Hatteras Island July 5-12th, as KD8JN/4 for the "United States Island Award" program. Hatteras Island as an USI number of NC-005S (also an IOTA of NA-067, Grid Square FM-25 and is located in Dare County). Activity will be on all bands. Suggested frequencies are: 3785, 7260, 14260, 18128, 21260, 24950 and 28460 kHz. QSL via the bureau or direct with a SASE to: Randall Phelps, 1226 Delverne Ave SW, Canton, Ohio 44710-1306 USA

USI ANNOUNCEMENT. The United States Islands Awards program (USI) will kick-off the summer with an operations from Northern Canada (Ops: KC7FVA, KC7KHU, and NL7TB). VY1USI will be active before and during the Canada Day Contest from YT-002, 03, 04, and 05 and from a couple of "new ones" starting around 1700z on June 30th. The team will focus on the emerald green Yukon River in Whitehorse. VE7USI operation will commence from Atlin Lake (Northern BC) on July 2nd around 1700z from several "new ones" through July 4th. VK9L, LORD HOWE ISLAND. Jun/JH4RHF, Kumiko/JR4DUW (YL) and Hiro/JR4PMX are planning a trip to Lord Howe for their summer vacation during the IOTA Contest weekend. The operation itself will be from July 24-29th or so. The callsigns they hope to be assigned are; VK9RH, VK9YL and VK9MX, respectively (not licensed yet). Please note these callsigns are for VK9L-land. Activity will be 80-10 meters, SSB/CW. There will be some 160m and RTTY activity, if there are many requests. QSL via JH4RHF, for VK9RH and YL (or operation by these two). QSL via JR4PMX for VK9MX (or op by JR4PMX).

XW, LAOS. It has been reported that Zorro, JH1AJT, is in Laos with a group that will be active now until July 2nd. This is not Zorro's first time to Laos as he was there in December, 1989, as XW8KPV. Reports indicate they will operate on as XW1A and on SSB as XW1 (YEP! That is the callsign). The group will be operating on 6 through 160 meters. QSL via JH1AJT.

YJ, VANUATU (Activity on 6 meters!). Stuart, YJ8UU, will be active from Vila over the next 3 years. Look for him to begin activity around July 19th. Operations will be on all bands including 6 meters. His station consists of an Icom 706; antennas are a Gap R5 vertical and a 3 element Delta loop for 6 meters with 2 elements for 20 meters. He will be active daily at 0630z on 50.110 MHz. QSL via ZL2HE.

Z2, ZIMBABWE. "THE 59(9) DX REPORT" states Cedric, N9YXA, will be active on 160-10 meters, mainly SSB, from August 3-21st while providing communications for a church convoy. Callsign is yet to be announced.

ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS. The Cinco Nueve Contest Group has announced early that they will operate as a Multi/Single from Little Cayman Island as ZF2RV during the CQWW CW Contest, November, 1997. Operators will be: Al, K7AR (ex-WB2TMP, op at YK0A); Lee, N7NU (ex-WB7SND, op at XR0Z); Mark, N7MQ (ZF2MC, and ex-N7MCA); Ron, WJ7R/ZF2RV; and Gene, K7DBV (ZF2BV). ZF2RV contest QSLs are via AA6BB/7; cards for all other QSOs between November 24th and December 3th (including ZF2RV) go to each operator's home call, CBA or via W7 Bureau.

ZP, PARAGUAY. Ernesto (GADX Bulletin Editor), LU6BEG, will be operating from Asuncion as ZP5/LU6BEG from July 9-13th. Operations will be on 80-10 meters CW/RTTY/BLU. During the IARU Contest, he will team-up with Renato as a Multi-Op station using the callsign ZP5XF or ZP0M (to be confirmed). QSL ZP5/LU6BEG to Box 1589 - 1000 CF - Argentina and ZP5XF/ZP0M to Box 1937, Asuncion, Paraguay.
