4U1UN, UNITED NATIONS HQ. A 4U1UN surprise appearance happen this past weekend on 12/15/20 meters. QSL via W6TER.

5J, BOCAGRANDE ISLAND (Colombia). A group of 12 Colombian hams will be active from here October 10-11th. They will have two HF stations on 20 and 40 meters using the callsign 5J8IB on SSB. No other details were given. QSL via HK3DDD.

5U, NIGER. The "DX News Sheet" reports that Dan, 5U7DG, is now active after his 5UDAN licence was revoked. He is using a long wire antenna until he gets a TH6 beam up. He does not like pile-ups. QSL via K4SE.

9G, GHANA. Steve, PA3GBQ, reports he will be here October 15-30th, for a job. He will be traveling all over the country, but if there are any possibilities, he will be active with the same call as before, 9G5BQ. Activity will be on SSB/CW with just a 100 watts and wire dipoles. QSL via PA3GBQ (CBA 1998 or bureau): Steve van Lieburg, Stresemannplaats 27, 3068 JL Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

9H0, MALTA. Just a quick reminder to look for the group of 24 Dutch operators that will be active from here from October 4-17th. Please refer to OPDX.375. Activity will be on all HF bands except 160 meters. Each operator will use their own 9H3 callsign, but a special club callsign 9H0VRZ will also be used.

DX NET REACTIVATED. It has been announced that Jim, VK9NS, will be reactivating the "Triple Two Net". For the time being it will be run on Saturdays and Sundays at 0530z on 14222 kHz as in the past. As conditions improve it is hoped that other net controllers are able to run this net on weekdays, but not on Mondays as this is the YL Triple Two Net. There is no word on the re-commencement of the HIDXA net which in the past was on Sundays at 0400z on the same frequency.

E31, ERITREA (UPDATE). The good news is Jacky, F2CW, was active this week and continues to be active as this bulletin was being prepared. The bad news is that the TS-50 he received has a broken VFO. It was reported, "he can't operate above 22 MHZ in SSB, and the power he is using now is 100w. And about CW, he can operate all bands but the power is from 10w to 50w only." KEEP LISTENING....... NOW FOR THE DISTURBING NEWS! The members of the "Space A DX Group" to Eritrea was informed this week that each operator must pay $500 for his operating permit, and they could not operate as a group with one license. This will cost the DXpedition $10,000 ($500 X 20 operators). They will lose several of their operators if this is not changed. The group has requested assistance on this matter through the Eritrean Embassy in Washington. As you can see, this group is in real need of donations or cuts may take place. For more information, check their Web pages at: http://qsl.net/eritrea/ or http://pagus.it/E31DX/ OPDX InterNet Subscribers will receive the complete press release by Bruce, WD4NGB.

FR5/G, GLORIOSO ISLAND (Update). Zareh, VE2NW, reports to OPDX that Jacques, FR5ZU, will be operating SSB only from Glorioso Island from October 6-30th. QSL via VE2NW. He also mentions that he will try to run Jacques about 0200z on 14256 for NA stations. Otherwise, Jacques will be operating solo.

FW, WALLIS AND FUTUNA. Cedric, HB9HFN, reports that since he had great fun and success last February with his DXpeditions to A3 and 5W (A35FN and 5W0FN) he is preparing to go to Wallis and Futuna next year. Activity will take place February 23rd through March 8th. He will be active once again especially for Europe, mostly on CW and on 80-10 meters. This will be a one man DXpedition unless someone with DX/contest experience is interested in going with him. Cedric has put up a WEB page where you can find more info (geography, schedules, material, logs, qsl, flight plan) about the DXpedition at: http://www.qsl.net/hb9hfn/pacific99.html

HO3, PANAMA. Louis, KG6UH/HP3XUG, reports he will use the callsign HO3A during the EME Contest weekends in October and December. It will also be used in the CQWW DX SSB Contest this month and for the ARRL 10 Meters Contest in December. Louis also likes to keep his ears glued to 6 meters during the TEP hours while at home (he also listens around 144.200 during the TEP hours). On HF, he mostly listens around 24900 kHz during his local morning hours (1100-1500z) and in the evenings (2200-0300z). If there is not much activity, he listens mainly around 18080 kHz, or around 10104 or 7005 kHz later in the evenings or in early mornings. See QSL info below.

LU1, SOUTH SHETLAND. The station LU1ZI is located on the Argentine base Jubany on Mayo Island (King George Island, Lat 62 14 South, Long 58 38 West, Grid Locator GC07QS). VK9C/VK9X, COCOS-KEELING AND CHRISTMAS ISLAND. Charlie, W0YG, wants to remind everyone that he and George/W8UVZ will operate from Christmas and Cocos Islands from February 6, 1999, until February 20, 1999, spending a week at each location. Emphasis will be primarily on the low bands, WARC bands and RTTY. Some 6 meters activity will be attempted. However, the purpose of the DXpedition will be to give as many of the deserving low band contacts as possible. A Battle Creek Special and beverages will be used for 160/80M. Callsigns have been applied for and will be announced as soon as they are issued. Every effort will be made to be on top band each day for both sunset and sunrise openings into the States. Please QRX on schedule requests as Charlie is sure that if there is an opening and the tropical QRN subsides, they will work you. SPECIAL ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. Charlie reports to OPDX about his Z2 and A2 operation. He states, "I worked a bunch from Z2 but never got the chance to operate on 80/160M as a DX mobile signal on those bands is equivalent to a dummy load. But an unforeseen bout in the bush with 'malaria' cut short my operation from Z2 and stopped me from further operating from A2 when I went there....... Sorry but I just couldn't do more. That malaria is bad stuff." Charlie reports he will again try for a license on his next trip and states he will attempt to do a better job.
