5R, MADAGASCAR (Top Band Activity!). George, W8UVZ, reports that Ake, 5R8FU, is expected to start to be active again during his sunrise on 160 meters. As many of you remember, he tried often on 1834 kHz just before his sunrise during the winter months in the northern latitudes during the past couple of seasons. Ake says he is again on 160m near his sunrise calling CQ on days that he would seem to have better propagation. George states, "In prior years, he started about 20 minutes or so before his sunrise (now near 0207z) through the 5R sun up. More often he would then QSY to 3513 and work those who could hear him on 80 meters. I don't believe this will be a DAILY routine since sunrise is in the 'wee' hours during Madagascar summer. But Ake was pretty faithful to days when he thought condx might be favorable."

5X, UGANDA. Milton, W6QE, informs OPDX that his dear friend Dr. Terry Wassell, K3JT, is now on the air from Uganda licensed and operating as 5X1X. Terry works for the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is doing statistical research on African Viruses. Terry will be there for approximately 6 weeks and is active on the low bands, particularily on CW. Check 40 meters in particular (after 0300z and again after 1930z).
