ST PIERRE ET MIQUELON

The island group St.Pierre et Miquelon is situated at 46 deg 44'North and 56 deg 27'West in the Atlantic Ocean some 25km off the southern coast of Newfoundland. Besides of the two main islands St. Pierre and Miquelon there are also Grand Colombier, aux Marins, Massacre, aux Pigeons and last not least aux Bainqueurs belonging to this group which measures about 242 sqkm in size. The highest elevation is the Morne de la Grande Montagne with 240m a.s.l. on Miquelon Island. The climate and the landscape is similar to that on the neighboring island Newfoundland. These islands are paradise for nature enthusiasts and there are only 6500 people living there all the time.

The islands were discovered by the Portuguese captain Alvarez Faguendez in 1520. French and British fought for the possession of this island over a long period of time. Since 1916 St. Pierre et Miquelon has the status of a French overseas departement.

Its capital St. Pierre and the two smaller cities Anse du Governement and Miquelon are very similar to those on Newfoundland. Colorful wooden houses can be seen everywhere but the supply of goods is very French. Main income for the islands are tourism and fishing. Two airports and a ferry to Canada offer good transportation means to and from the islands.

Hiroo, XW0X, asks everybody NOT to enclose ANY money bills to mail to Laos! An average employee of the Laotian post earns about 17 Euro per month so the temptation is very high... Hiroo proposes to send IRCs only!!
